Golden Clam Threat Closes Lake Okataina

Temporary Closure of Lake Okataina was sort by the Ngati Tarawhai Iwi Trust.

"We have a crucial announcement to share with our whanau and wider community.

The Ngati Tarawhai Iwi Trust, as dedicated kaitiaki (guardians) of Lake Okataina, made the difficult but necessary decision to seek temporary closure of the lake to boats. At a meeting to discuss the closure, support in principle was given to Ngati Tarawhai Iwi Trust by the Te Arawa Lakes Strategy Group (including Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Rotorua Lakes Council, Te Arawa Lakes Trust and local Community Groups).

Why the Closure?

Biosecurity Concerns: We are taking this step to protect our lake from the real threat of invasive Golden Clams (Corbicular Fluminea) which will cause irreparable and irreversible damage to our native flora and fauna, including kakahi, koura and kokopu.Preserving the unique ecosystem of Lake Okataina is our duty as an iwi and this measure is essential to sustaining the wellbeing of our lake.

Our Commitment as Kaitiaki:

Lake Okataina holds deep cultural significance for us, and we are dedicated to protecting it. Our decision has been made with the best intentions, to maintain and safeguard the lake from this invasive threat.

What's Next?

We are looking to put the closure in effect prior to September 29, 2023 until further notice, and we will keep you updated on any changes.

While boats won't be allowed on the lake during this time, you can still enjoy the lake's shores for walking, swimming and picnics.

We are actively collaborating with experts and local authorities to address the Golden Clam threat, and develop processes that will prevent the spread of Golden clams.

We hope that everyone understands why Ngäti Tarawhai wi Trust are looking to close the lake as a precautionary measure with its future health, use and enjoyment by whänau and the wider community our major concern.
