Personal Submissions
We trust you all made your personal submissions on the reversal of the previously reduced speeds to 80kph around the wider lake area to Waka Kotahi.
Our Survey
Thank you to those of you who let us know you thoughts in our survey of members so we could make an organisation submission.
The results for the sections of SH33 between Rotorua and Okawa Bay were 53% for returning the speed limit to 100kph, 38% for retaining it at 80kph and 9% neutral.
The results for the sections of SH33 between Te Nga Junction and Rotoma were 52% for returning the speed limit to 100kph, 41% for retaining it at 80kph and 7% neutral.
Whilst the return to 100kph received the greatest support in both cases it was interesting to see the significant support for retaining the existing 80kph speed limits.
Our Submission
The clearest mandate for a Community submission came from our question regarding the short 850m section of SH33 between Mourea and Okere Falls. 52% supported a reduction to 60kph, 34% retaining 80kph and just 14% returning the speed to 100kph.
The comments from those who supported both the 60kph and 80kph limits raised serious concerns about the current speed limits being confusing and inconsistent to have for this short 80kph section sandwiched between two 60kph sections. Especially given their safety concerns regarding the location of the concealed school and boat ramp adjacent to each end and the busy visitor and tourist activities and presence of young children and the Marae in the Okere Falls and Mourea areas. If it is confusing for locals, how is it for visitors and tourists?
Our submission also has support from many of the visitor and tourist operators in the area.
