Speed Limit Reversal Consultation

Consultation is running 30 January - 13 March 2025 to review whether the speed reductions applied to certain sections of state highways since 1 January 2020 should have their original higher speeds reinstated.

Of specific interest to us will be the changes proposed for SH30 and SH33.

SH30

For SH30 the reduced speed around the edge of Rotoiti WILL be retained - it is NOT being consulted on.

It is however proposed to reverse the speed reductions of many sections of SH30 which have been reduced from 100 to 80kph. This would likely please many of our members, especially those who objected to the proposed reductions.

SH33

For SH33 the big issue round the Rotoiti lake edge is likely to be the the proposed increase from 80 kph to 100 kph for the short 850 m section currently 80 kph between Mourea and Okere Falls Store - “SH33 Okere Falls to South of Waipuna Bay”.

This increase makes no sense and should instead be a decrease to 60 kph. This would then match the sections either side of it and Waka Kotahi’s own philosophy of removing short sections with varying speed limits which only confuse drivers and lead to them inadvertently dangerously speeding in areas where they shouldn’t.

It is also proposed to reverse many of the speed reductions from 100 kph to 80 kph between Rotorua and Rotoiti. No doubt many of our members will have a view on this too.
