Waka Kotahi Agree to Review SH33 Speed Between Mourea and Okere Falls
Stop Press
Wkaka Kotahi have just announced that:
"We will be consulting on a proposal to change the speed limit on a section of approximately 830 metres of SH33 at Waipuna Bay, Lake Rotoiti (between Ōkere Falls and Mourea) from 100km/h to 80km/h. The speed limit at each end of this stretch of road is 60km/h.
Due to the short length, 80km/h is a more suitable speed limit and the community in the area is very keen to reduce this speed in an area where there are many pedestrians, activity and visitors.
We will advise you via this e-newsletter of when these consultations will be proceeding – expected to be January 2026".
AGM Motion Proposed
We will be proposing a motion at our AGM to support LRCA's recommendation that the speed of this section be reduced to match the adjoining sections.
Our Christmas News Letter provided background including support from Todd McClay's office.
The coalition Government introduced a Land Transport Rule last year to reverse speed limit reductions introduced by the previous Labour Government. This had the effect of reverting a number of State Highway sections from 80kph back to 100kph. Included was the 850 metre section of SH33 from the Waipuna Delta to Whangamarino School between Mourea and Ōkere Falls.
The increase made no sense given the nature of the adjoining communities, the school and public boat ramp at each end, its short length and the adjacent 60kph sections. Accordingly, backed by member’s response to our survey, LRCA submitted that in fact a speed limit of 60kph would be more appropriate.
It was also highlighted that the planned reversal for this section of highway appeared to contravene the new Land Transit Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024, which requires a section of highway with a speed limit of 100kph to be a minimum length of 2,000m.
We also alerted our local MP, Todd McClay whose office later advised that ‘this matter is complex, as the process of reversing policy is separate from that for reviewing speed limits'.
As our submission has not been declined by NZTA his office has offered to assist LRCA in putting together a request for a ‘Review of the speed limit in this area’. We will propose a motion at the AGM to this effect and will proceed based on the level of support from the meeting.
