Proposed Kaituna Hydro Power Station
An application has been lodged with Ministry for the Environment under the Fast-track Approvals Bill 2024 for a Hydro Development Project on the Ōkere/Kaituna River which proposes a low-level weir structure on the bed of the Kaituna River some 3km from the lake outlet, an off-river series of canals, a head pond, intake and outfall structures to support a nominal 13.5 MW/80 GWh power station.

Some major concerns have already been expressed by members of our local community (particularly recreational river users). LRCA will maintain a close watching brief on progress at this stage. Our primary interests would be:-
- Any proposals to alter Lake Level operations for the purpose of manipulating river flows.
- The potential ecological and environmental impacts.
