Call for Action on the Ohau Diversion Wall

The structural deterioration of the Ōhau Channel wall was on the Agenda at the LakesWater Quality Society AGM on 22 March 2025. After verbal reports from LWQS and BoPRC representatives, further debate followed primarily centred on the continual delay and lack of action in determining a solution with the general consensus that 2-3 years is too slow! A motion was then proposed and resolved:-

‘That the LWQS in collaboration with the Rotoiti community considers legal options (possibly an Enforcement Order) along with other actions to expedite a long-term engineered solution to the Ōhau Channel wall repairs in order to prevent the leakage of Lake Rotorua water into Lake Rotoiti and the Okere Arm (i.e. restore the original functionality of the wall) as soon as possible’.

LWQS is currently considering holding a special meeting at Rotoiti to discuss this further course of action. We will keep members updated on progress.
