Ohau Wall Breaking Down Badly!
The Ohau Channel Diversion Wall was designed to last 50 years, but it started deteriorating after just six.
Why? At the time of construction, Bay of Plenty Regional Council accepted an alteration to the specified steel standard, resulting in the use of a thinner, cheaper steel known for its susceptibility to corrosion.
Despite early warnings of corrosion in 2014, BOPRC has not committed to fixing the Wall. Leakages were first noted in 2019 and continue to persist, unchecked and unaddressed.
This ongoing deterioration threatens not only Lake Rotoiti’s water quality but also undermines the $50m of ratepayer and taxpayer dollars invested in lake restoration programmes and sewerage upgrades.
