Ohau Wall – BoPRC Review Repair Options

20 October 2025

Ohau Wall - BoPRC review repair options - We seek accelerated approach

Since the resolution from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (BoPRC) Meeting held 7 August 2025, representatives from both LRCA and LWQS have accompanied Council and University of Waikato (UoW) scientists on a tour of Rotoiti to discuss ongoing research into drivers of algal blooms and lake water quality in the western basin. A specific UoW report is expected back by early December.

We have also participated in the most recent meeting of Council’s Community Technical Panel where next steps towards assessing repair and/or replacement options were outlined and discussed. BoPRC undertook to provide official progress updates on their website, the most recent of which is available HERE.

In line with the directions of the Council resolution, they confirm that outcomes will be sought as expeditiously as possible.

Our FIXOHAUWALL campaign representatives have continued to collaborate in pursuit of more immediate long-term repair options to restore the integrity of the Wall.

The Joint Committee remains adamant that the existing state of both the king and sheet piles require urgent attention and is currently negotiating to critique the recent engineering and scientific reports commissioned by Council. Further progress updates towards this will be forthcoming in the near future. Whatever evolves, LRCA is committed to seeking optimal and timely solutions for the enhancement and protection of Rotoiti lake water quality.
