LWQS Expert’s Ohau Wall Findings

17 June 2026

Expert reports support urgent Remediation of the Ohau Wall

Three reports were presented at a well attended Open meeting following the LWQS AGM on the 1st June 26 at Lake Rotoiti. Notes taken during the presentations are available as follows:

The Presentations covered:

 1. The Hydrological study of the Intrusion of Rotorua Lake Water into Rotoiti
  • This report presented by David Hamilton and Mohammed Hassan Ranjbar (Australian Rivers Institute, Griffith University) at the FOWC v BoPRC hearing (29 May 2026) and  quantifies the significant volume of Lake Rotorua water intruding into Lake Rotoiti through defects in the Ōhau Channel Diversion Wall.
 2. Engineering Assessment of Ohau Wall's Current Condition
  • This report presented by John Gifford on behalf of Garry Tear. He confirms that the nature and extent of corrosion on the existing sheet piles indicates that they need to be replaced, not merely repaired. The holes that have developed cannot be remmedied with simple patching.
  3. Okawa Bay — Purpose & Methodology
  • This presentation presented by Professor Deniz Özkundakci, Waikato University (BoPRC Freshwater Chair), summarised the results of a thorough scientific ecological investigation into the many factors which effect water quality in Okawa Bay,
