LRCA & LWQS Ōhau Wall Campaign Update

9 September 2026

Update from LRCA & LWQS Ōhau Wall Campaign Group

Research - Next Phase

The Campaign Group Joint Committee has recently contracted the next-phase water quality modelling work to David Hamilton and Hassan Ranjbar (Australian Rivers Institute) to address the question of: ‘How does progressive Rotorua-water intrusion through the deteriorating Ōhau Channel Diversion wall affect Lake Rotoiti's water quality’.

It is anticipated that the modelling will be conducted in collaboration with BoP Regional Council and Waikato University and is aimed for completion by end of year. Further updates on progress are currently awaited.

Council Legal Responsibilities

The group continues to probe Council’s legal responsibilities and accountability towards wall maintenance, given the requirements to maintain water quality though various legislation and its own rules.

Recognition in Plan Change 10

In addition, the group will seek formal recognition of the impacts on Lake Rotoiti if the wall is not maintained, and the nutrient targets for the lake are not achieved, as part of an impending review update of BoPRC Lake Rotorua Nutrient Management Plan Change 10.
