Predator Free Okere Falls & East Rotoiti Update
Predator free Okere Falls are doing a wonderful job eliminating 870 pests over the last year. Jo Warren is leading the drive to achieve similar results at the Eastern end of Rotoiti. Join the team!
Predator free Okere Falls
Our goal is to rid the lakes area of mustelids, rats and possums.
We have an awesome team of locals that dedicate their time to making this possible and we are having some good success. Large or small, every action counts.
Bird life is on the rise. The Dab chick is doing better in Otaramarae and Okere than anywhere else in the lake district. We have seen increased numbers of Kereru, morning bird chorus are full of Bell birds and Tuis. A pair of North Island Black Robins have been sighted on the Te Akau peninsular, there are regular sitings of Kotare and at night it is common to hear the Ruru.
Rats, Stoats and weasels are being successfully managed using DOC200 traps, with a total of five stoats captured on a single property.
The T – Rex trap in a tunnel is another manageable way to control Rat numbers that is slightly easier to use and operate if you are a little bit afraid of the more grunty DOC 200.
In September, we implemented a wasp-trapping program aimed at attracting queen wasps. This appeared to be effective, as there were noticeably fewer wasps and nests observed over the summer compared to the previous year.
Catches this year - 1st April 2025 - 1st April 2026
12 stoats, 2 ferrets, 5 hedgehogs, 163 possums , 7 rabbits, 673 rats & 7 wallabies.
Email temauriokere@gmail.com if you want to loan one of our traps and contribute to these numbers in the year ahead. You can also stay up to date with some of our activities via the Predator Free Okere Falls Facebook page.
East Rotoiti Predator Free Initiative Now Underway
Inspired by the success of the Okere Falls Predator Free group—who have helped bring back the sound of native birdsong—we’re excited to launch a new pest control initiative in East Rotoiti.
With support from Predator Free Rotorua, we’re offering free rat traps (with wooden tunnels) to local residents. Each trap will be registered to your property to help track and strengthen our collective impact.
If you’d like to get involved and receive a trap, please contact:
