Emergency Response Planning

12 September 2024

Designated communities for emergency response plans have been agreed

The development of a Lake Rotoiti emergency response plan continues to bubble away behind the scenes. Recently progress has taken a huge leap forward, with the definition of designated communities around the lake in which community emergency response plans will be developed. The boundaries have been determined based on population densities and any specific geographical features.

Five communities have been identified and can be seen on the draft map attached and include

ID005_Hinehopu /Tapuaeharuru Bay /Gisborne Point / Te Puna Whakareia

ID004_Ruato Bay / Lake Okataina Road / Hauparu Bay / Moose Lodge / Curtis Road

ID003_Hells Gate / Tikitere / Te Puea Road

ID002_Okawa Bay / Mourea / Hamurana Road intersection with Lake Rotorua

ID001_Whangamarino / Okere Falls / Okere Arm / Te Ahau Road / Otaramarae / Whangamoa Drive / Tumoana Road

You can see a map of these areas here.

The community emergency response plan template has been submitted to the LRCA committee for their consideration. The next step will be to use the template to create and refine each community plan. Each plan will identify specific area hazards, establish community LED centres, identify communication strategies both within and outside the community and promote community and individual preparedness.

A number of volunteers have offered their assistance to date and we will be reaching out to them shortly as we move forward into the next phase. We have not yet identified a volunteer/contact for the Curtis Road, Hauparu Bay and Ruato Bay community. If you live in this area and would like to be involved, please contact Andrea by email; lrca@rotoiti.co.nz

We would like to acknowledge and thank Linda Johnstone; Rotorua Lakes Council, Emergency Management Civil Defence Coordinator, who retired recently. She worked very closely with us in the development of our emergency response plan template and her mentoring and assistance has been and will continue to be missed. We look forward to working with Lindas replacement, but, in the meantime, LRCA would like to wish Linda all the very best in her future endeavours.
