State Highway Safe Speeds

We await the result of our submission that the 850m 80kph section of SH33 between Mourea & Okere Falls be reduced to 60kph. It may take several months.

Your submissions are due by Tuesday 17 February. Todd McClay's office advise 60 km/h supporters to submit using the online form as per the instructions in this post.

LRCA highlights that NZTA's submission form does not allow community to support a speed limit of 60 km/h between Okawa Bay and Okere Falls. We suggest you delay submitting until this is remedied.

Waka Kotahi has acknowledged community concerns and will consult on a proposed reduction of the speed limit between Mourea and Okere Falls early in 2026.

Backed by our member survey LRCA has submitted that the 850m 80kph section of SH33 between Mourea & Okere Falls be reduced to 60kph.

The government's proposed new Rule requires reduced safer speeds to be reversed and the public consultation process to be repealed

The National Government advises safer speed limits will be retained where there is a poor safety record and community support.

Implementation of the new safer speed limits for SH30 and Rotoiti is now well underway with many of the new signs already installed

The new safe speeds will be implemented in stages and road users will see the new speed limit signs first in Rotoiti and Rotomā,

New signs will be installed over 2-3 weeks starting Monday 14 August finally signalling the actual introduction of the new speed limits.

The East Rotoiti community will be pleased to hear that their request for a speed of 60kph has been acknowledged and approved.

Waka Kotahi advise that the SH30 Speed review decisions are due for final sign off and public announcement mid April 23.

LRCA has submitted that the SH30 speed limit should be 60kph from Moose Lodge to Hongis Track including the 1km from Ruato Bay and Gisborne Pt.

Waka Kotahi has adopted most of LRCA’s proposed 60kph speed limits except for 1km between Ruato Bay and Gisborne Pt where 80kph is proposed.

Waka Kotahi has made excellent progress. Proposed speed reviews are expected mid January followed by 4 weeks public consultation.
