Will BoPRC Expedite Fix of Ohau Wall?

LWQS & LRCA's Call for Action on Ohau Wall to BoPRC
At BoPRC’s Council Meeting on 7 August, LWQS along with LRCA representatives, lead by John Gifford, Chair of LWQS, presented compelling evidence for action on the Ohau Wall:
* That Lake Rotorua’s water quality is significantly poorer than Rotoiti’s and this is expected to continue to be the case
* That the Ohau Wall plays a critical role in protecting Rotoiti from the detrimental impact of Rotorua’s poorer quality water
* It is thus essential that the rapid deterioration in the Ohau Wall be addressed to protect the water quality of Lake Rotoiti
* That the council commence immediate action to repair or replace the wall.
The Council in return:
* Downplayed the impact of the deterioration in the wall being a major source of pollution for Rotoiti.
* Highlighted uncertainties affecting decision making including the likely effectiveness of potential repair methods and the need for the wall given the improving quality of Rotorua water
* Concluded that all repair option investigations be expedited including other (?) options for improving Rotoiti water quality
Our team was left with serious concerns regarding the Council’s sense of urgency and whether it will lead to the decisions and actions required.
Lake Rotoiti is a local, regional and national treasure which needs to be protected and enhanced for present and future generations. All parties need to act to keep it this way!
