BoPRC Lake Rotoiti Water Level Management Concerns LRCA
Over the past year, Rotoiti lake levels have generally been well managed within the operational limits prescribed in the existing Consent. However, BoPRC has been conducting a trial regime during heavier rainfall events over recent weeks involving opening the Okere gates at night and closing them back down the following day.
Whilst the explanation given is ‘to determine the effects on (Kaituna) river bank stability as well as identifying any additional downstream effects’, LRCA has expressed concerns over non-notification and more specifically to the potential detriments to health and safety aspects relating to saturated groundwater and lakeside flooding primarily along the eastern reaches of the lake.
We are currently pursuing these concerns with Council.
